San Gimignano is a small town set among hills, olive groves and vineyards in the heart of Tuscany. The center of this authentic town is surrounded by 14 towers and houses from the XIII and XIV centuries. Organizing a trip to San Gimignano is not difficult. For independent travelers, we have prepared some practical tips.
When you enter the city, you will see a paid parking lot where you can leave your car. From here you can take a glass elevator (convenient if you have a stroller) to the city center, which is located behind the fortress wall.
It is more convenient to get to the city by car, but in case there is no such opportunity:
  1. From Siena: from the bus station at Piazza Antonio Gramsci, bus number 130. You can buy tickets at the vending machine near the stop. It is better to take tickets in two directions.
  2. From Florence: from the bus station in via Santa Caterina da Siena, take bus number 131 to Poggibonsi, change to bus number 133 or 130 to S.Gimignano.
  3. From Pisa: go to Pisa Centrale station to Empoli station. There you need to change to the train to Poggibonsi - S.Gimignano. Then take bus #130.

As soon as you walk up to the city center, you immediately feel the atmosphere of the Middle Ages: cobblestone streets, small stores, bottegas, and craft shops where local craftsmen make unique items by hand.

San Gimignano's ceramics workshops draw the eye; colorful pots, vases, and sets. The local ceramics are very bright and interesting.

  • Museo d'Arte Sacra (Museum de Arte Sacra). It is a museum of religious art, which exhibits paintings and sculptures of the XIV-XV centuries. In the same building there is a small Etruscan museum.
  • The Church of Sant'Agostino (Chiesa di Sant'Agostino), which is located on the northwestern edge of the city. In the chapel you can see a cycle of 17 frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli that describe the life of St. Augustine.
